Enjoy the sunshine — but wear sunscreen!
Inspired by personal experience and a desire to give back to the community, sophomore Jack Benonis recently led a sun safety initiative across the Charlotte Latin campus as part of his Eagle Scout service project.
Jack’s goal was to raise awareness around sun safety and help prevent skin damage that can lead to melanoma and other skin cancers. With support from the Purple Promise Foundation and Impact Melanoma, Jack helped bring three sunscreen dispensers to Charlotte Latin: last week, they officially became available to the Latin community.
The dispensers are now available outside the Middle School health room with nurse Jenny Greathouse, outside the Upper School health room with nurse Jean Asinger, and inside the Lower School health room with nurse Dawn Hull.
Jack was inspired by the impact of skin cancer on his own family members and friends, including the loss of his grandfather to melanoma. He explained that he wanted to create something meaningful that could make a difference for the Latin community.
“I love Latin, and I love this community,” Jack shared. “We have so much amazing outdoor space on our campus, so we get a lot of sun exposure. I wanted to help the students stay safe, and maybe help prevent sun damage or cancer in the future.”
